With Views of the East River: Greta Garbo’s New York City Apartment

at 450 East 52nd Street, NYC

Pictured is Greta Garbo's East Manhattan apartment in the exclusive Campanile at 450 East 52nd Street, built in 1927 in Venetian-Gothic style. The Hollywood actress, born in 1905 in Sweden, acquired American citizenship in 1951, and two years later purchased an apartment in New York, where she lived until the end of her days. She passed away at the age of 84 in 1990. The seven-room apartment with panoramic views of the East River occupies the entire fifth floor of the building, where many Hollywood actors and celebrities have lived. Manhattan very much reminded the artist of her native Stockholm, where G. Garbo grew up, since it was located near the water, there was also a lot of sunlight, and from the windows you could see ships passing.

The 280 square meter (2,855 sq ft) apartment has three bedrooms, a study and three bathrooms. The interior is dominated by the artist’s favorite warm pink and green colors, and the walls are decorated with silk fabric and paneled with natural pine. The apartment was put up for sale in March 2017 and immediately sold for an asking price of $5.95 million.
