MAJOR EXHIBITION OF FURNITURE DESIGN OPENS IN CHATSWORTH

Chatsworth – home to the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire – is set to host a contemporary furniture exhibition called Make Yourself Comfortable at Chatsworth, in March.

Successive generations of the Devonshire family have commissioned and displayed work by leading artists and up-and-coming makers since the 17th-century, and the 21st-century is no exception.

The Dowager Duchess Deborah Cavendish who died last year was credited with securing the house’s future as one of the UK’s most important art collections. The estate have ensured that as well as housing one of the greatest private art collections in the world, the house includes ceramics, metalwork, textiles and sculpture by some of the most famous artists, designers and makers. 

Although Chatsworth house and garden have played host to many contemporary sculptural exhibits in the past, this is the first design exhibition to be staged and was inspired by the Duke’s growing interest in contemporary furniture and his enthusiasm to support today’s designers and makers. It is also the first major exhibition since the famous Dowager Duchess died.

Make Yourself Comfortable at Chatsworth will see items from the private collection of the Duke and Duchess showcased alongside furniture by internationally acclaimed designers – from Thomas Heatherwick and Amanda Levete, to Marc Newson, Tokujin Yoshioka, Piet Hein Eek and Moritz Waldemeyer.

The exhibition will also showcase thought-provoking, specially commissioned pieces, including Raw Edges’ End Grain seating which will become part of the Sculpture Gallery, and Counterpart by Tom Price which will be on display in the Chapel. The method used to produce this design – called Endgrain – has just been shortlisted at Designs of the Year 2015 awards by the Design Museum.
